East Head Spit

It also forms the western side of the entrance to Chichester harbour.

The picture above was taken 15 years ago in September 2010. Even though the spit has changed in that time it provides a good contextual setting. Many changes will be quite subtle but the most noticeable to the casual visitor will be the built up berm and reconfiguration of the north western end of the car park.

This area is adjacent to a location known as the Hinge – so called as it is this point that the spit itself tends to rotate. There are records and sketches suggesting the changes and the rotation going back as far as 1786 – see our Map page.
